HC Deb 09 December 1929 vol 233 cc80-1W
Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Home Secretary having regard to statutory Police Regulation.No. 9, what is the policy of the Government concerning the appointments to chief constable in the police force?

Mr. CLYNES

These appointments are made by the local police authorities, subject to my approval. The power I exercise is therefore one of veto, and I should normally approve the police authority's selection unless I was satisfied that the selected candidate was unsuitable, or did not comply with the requirements of the Police Regulations.
