§ Mr. HORE-BELISHAasked the Home Secretary having regard to statutory Police Regulation.No. 9, what is the policy of the Government concerning the appointments to chief constable in the police force?
81W
§ Mr. CLYNESThese appointments are made by the local police authorities, subject to my approval. The power I exercise is therefore one of veto, and I should normally approve the police authority's selection unless I was satisfied that the selected candidate was unsuitable, or did not comply with the requirements of the Police Regulations.
