HL Deb 16 April 1929 vol 74 cc5-6WA
VISCOUNT CECIL OF CHELWOOD

asked whether His Majesty's Government can for the public convenience say on what day the General Election will take place?

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)

I am afraid no answer can be given to this Question. The responsibility for advising as to the date of the Dissolution of Parliament I believe rests constitutionally not with the Government but with the Prime Minister alone. I hope, therefore, the noble Viscount will forgive me if I say that as a member of the Government I have no authority to furnish an answer.

House adjourned at twenty-five minutes past four o'clock.
