§ Sir J. GILMOURIt is estimated that the total expenditure in Scotland met out of local rates during the year ended 15th May, 1927, in respect of the relief of destitute able-bodied unemployed (excluding the cost of relief to miners' dependants during the coal stoppage of 1926), was £1,740,348, and that the corresponding figure in respect of the maintenance of public roads was £3,200,000.
