HC Deb 20 November 1928 vol 222 cc1562-3W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the nature of the extra accommodation he is providing to solve the shift system that has been adopted in the schools in certain districts in Glasgow and whether he can give any definite information as to when it is expected that children of school age in those districts will be able to receive full-time education?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The education authority of Glasgow, on whom the responsibility for solving the difficulty primarily rests, is providing additional accommodation in temporary premises pending the acquisition of certain sites for the erection of permanent schools. It is anticipated that the measures now being taken, supplemented by the reorganisation of classes and the employment of additional teachers, will result in the disappearance of all the double-shift classes by January.
