Mr. W. M. WATSON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the amount paid in able-bodied relief in each of the parishes in the Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy areas of the County of Fife for the year ending 31st March, 1928, and the amount of local rates borne by each parish?

Sir J. GILMOUR

As the Scottish financial year closes on 15th May, complete figures are not available for the

the County of Lanark, in payment of relief to unemployed for each year from 1921 until the end of 1927; and the amount paid from the beginning of the present year until the latest available date?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The following table gives the information for which the hon. Members asks:

year 1927–28. Special returns are collected from eight of the parishes in the Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy districts and the expenditure on relief to the able-bodied poor in these parishes for the 48 weeks ended 14th April, 1928, together with the rateable values and the rates per £ levied in 1927–28, is given below. An estimate of the amount of assessment imposed may be made by multiplying the mean of the rateable values by the total rate.

Expenditure on relief to the able-bodied poor for 48 weeks ended 14th April, 1928. Rateable Values, 1927–28. Total rates per £ 1927–28 (excluding Special District Rates and Water Rates).
