Mr. ROBINSON

asked the Secretary of State for War seeing that there are some 270,000 less men in the British Army in 1928 than there were in 1913, if he will state the reduction in the number of officers of commissioned rank and the reduction in the personnel of the War Office for the present year as compared with 1913, respectively?

Taking the establishments mentioned on pages 11 and 7 of Army Estimates for 1913–14 and 1928 respectively, to which I think the hon. Member refers, namely,

1913–14.

  • Regular Forces (Regimental), Home and Colonial (including Regular Establishment of Special Reserve).
  • Colonial and Native Indian Corps.
  • Army Reserve.
  • Special Reserve (excluding Regular Establishment).
  • Militia, United Kingdom.
  • Militia, Reserve Division.
  • Militia, Channel Islands (including Permanent Staff).
  • Militia, Malta and Bermuda, and Bermuda Volunteers (including Permanent Staff). Territorial Force (including Permanent Staff).
  • Isle of Man Volunteers (including Permanent Staff).
  • Officers Training Corps (Officers and Permanent Staff).
  • Regular Forces (Regimental) on Indian Establishment.

there is a reduction of some 4,000 officers.

As regards War Office Staff the figures are as follow:—

The numbers include attached officers, typists, messengers, cleaners and local audit staff at Outstations (except China) but exclude Metropolitan Police and staff on loan to other Departments.
