HC Deb 14 May 1928 vol 217 cc681-2W
Mr. ROBINSON

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs what assisted passages are given to Dominions overseas; and whether any of these are available for unemployed workers in the textile industry?

Mr. AMERY

I invite the hon. Member's attention to the recently published Report of the Oversea Settlement Committee for 1927 (Cmd. 3088), of which he has received a copy. Particulars of the assisted passages schemes arranged with the Governments of the oversea Dominions are contained in Appendices III and IV. It will be seen from the Report that assisted passages to Canada are confined to persons who intend to settle on the land, or, in the case of women, to undertake household work. In the case of Australia and New Zealand, this restriction does not apply to nominated persons, i.e., those for whom employment and a home can be guaranteed by some individual or organisation in the Dominion.
