HC Deb 21 June 1928 vol 218 c1766W
Mr. ALBERY

asked the Secretary of State for War the last contract price for beef for the Army, and the lowest figure al, which Home-killed meat was available on the same date?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

The average price of beef for Home Commands under the contracts commencing on 1st July next is about 4.9d. per lb., delivered to units. The average of the market prices, as given in the Agricultural Market Report for four large towns, namely London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, at the time tenders were returned was 10.3125d. per lb. undelivered for first quality English beef, and 9.375d. per lb. undelivered for second quality. The latter would not be regarded as complying with the requirements of the War Department specification.
