Mr. BARKER

asked the Secretary for Mines the number of fatal accidents and the number killed in the mines of the United Kingdom for the year 1927; the number killed by falls of roof and sides during this period; and the total number seriously inured by all causes during the year 1927?

Commodore KING

During the year 1927 there were 1,028 fatal accidents at mines under the Coal Mines Act, resulting in 1,128 deaths, of which 565 deaths were due to falls of roof and sides. During the same period, the total number of persons seriously injured by accidents at these mines was 4,693.

Mr. LAWSON

asked the Secretary for Mines the number of accidents, fatal and non-fatal, in the mining industry for the years 1925 and 1927?

During the year 1925, there were 1,050 fatal and 177,609 non-fatal accidents at mines under the Coal Mines Act, resulting in 1,136 deaths and disablement for more than three days to 178,060 persons. In 1927, 1,028 fatal accidents caused 1,128 deaths and 172,883 non-fatal accidents caused injuries to 173,449 persons.
