§ Lord E. PERCYThe number of teacher-pensioners on 31st January last was 25,973. Of these about five-sixths retired on pension at the age of 60 or over, but I could not, without the expenditure of a very considerable amount of time and labour, classify them according to their present ages. The sums payable to pensioners in 1927–28 amount to £4,341,135, and the receipts from teachers' contributions to £2,440,000, leaving a net burden of £1,901,135 to be borne by the Exchequer. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to pages 35–36 of the Memorandum on the Board's Estimates, 1926, a copy of which I am sending him.
