asked the Minister of Labour the total number of claims for unemployment benefit in Glasgow during the past year and the number of refusals, and the figures for last year?

pursuant to his reply[OFFICIAL REPORT, 19th December, 1928: col. 2998, Vol. 222], supplied the following information:

During the period 3rd January, 1928, to 10th December, 1928, 303,058 fresh and renewal claims to unemployment benefit were made at Employment Exchanges in the Glasgow area, and the average number of claims to benefit current was 37,013. The corresponding figures for the period 4th January, 1927, to 12th December, 1927, are 291,985 claims made and 42,435 claims current. Between 19th April, 1928, and 10th December, 1928, 25,423 claims to benefit made at these offices were disallowed by Insurance Officers, and 1,171 claims have been recommended for disallowance by Courts of Referees in cases where?8 days benefit have been received during the preceding six months. Comparable statistics of disallowances of benefit are not available in respect of the period prior to 19th April, 1928.
