§ Mr. DENNISONasked the President of the Board of Education if the steel and iron works at Jarrow-on-Tyne, Newburn-on-Tyne, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Hartlepools, Hull, Leeds, Frodingham, Scunthorpe, Appleby, Port Talbot, Margarm, Cardiff, Newport (Monmouthshire), Hawarden, Irlam, Barrow-in-Furness, and Workington are in the distressed areas for the purposes of the proposed grants?
§ Sir P. GOFFasked the President of the Board of Education whether the relief fund for miners includes the Cleveland ironstone miners, who have been out of work since 12th February, 1920?
§ Lord E. PERCYI will answer these two questions together. As hon. Members are aware, neither the Lord Mayor's appeal, nor the Prime Minister's announcement, contemplated the extension of the scope of the fund beyond the distressed coalfields. Within these areas, on the other hand, there is no intention of confiding the benefits of the fund to the families of the miners, and any distress in the coalfields which may be due 3037W to depression in industries other than the coal industry will, therefore, fall within the scope of the fund.
