HC Deb 19 December 1928 vol 223 c3051W
Sir R. THOMAS

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the great extent to which clerks and warehouse staffs in cities have to work in basements, insufficiently ventilated, often facing north, and in artificial light all day; and whether he will institute inquiries into these conditions, with a view to subsequent legislation?

Sir K. WOOD

My right hon. Friend is aware that basement rooms are used, but there is not sufficient evidence to warrant a general conclusion as to the effect on health. Local authorities have powers to deal with insanitary conditions. He cannot promise a special investigation at the present time, but if the hon. Member has specific information of ill results from present conditions, my right hon. Friend will be glad to receive it.
