HC Deb 12 December 1928 vol 223 c2139W
Mr. B. SMITH

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in the contract with Sir John Jackson, Limited, for the construction of the Singapore naval base, the Admiralty made any stipulations prohibiting the employment of aliens in connection with this work?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The contract stipulations prohibit the employment of other than British subjects on the contractors' staff, without Admiralty sanction, but this prohibition does not extend to employment of workmen at Singapore.

Mr. SMITH

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that the American company to whom the contract for four large mechanical excavators for use on the Singapore naval base has been given formed a British company in May of this year with a capital of £1,000; and whether this fact was taken into consideration when the contract was granted?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, and to the second part in the negative as far as the Admiralty are concerned. We did not make the contract for the excavators.
