HC Deb 11 December 1928 vol 223 cc1920-1W
Mr. KELLY

asked the Home Secretary what factories in Woolwich are operating the five-day week; and what number of workpeople are so engaged?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I regret I am not in a position to furnish the hon. Member with the particulars asked for in this and the other similar questions of which he has given notice, in regard to the operation of the five day week in various districts. I am advised that in order to obtain the information it would be necessary for the inspectors to make a number of special inquiries, which, in view of the great pressure of work on the Department and the limited staff available, I do not think it would be right to ask them to undertake. Such information on the subject as was available was summarised in the Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Factories for 1927, and I hope it will be sufficient for the hon. Member's purpose if I ask the Chief Inspector to review the position again in his Report for 1928.
