asked the Secretary of State for War what were the total numbers of officers and men in the French, British, American, Japanese, and Italian armies on 31st July, 1914, and 31st July, 1928?

pursuant to his reply [OFFICIAL REPORT, 27th November, 1928; col. 215, Vol. 223], supplied the following particulars.

STATEMENT showing Establishment for the British Army (exclusive of India) included in Army Estimates, 1914 and 1928, and the approximate authorised Strengths of the French, American, Japanese and Italian Stan ding Armies for those years.
