HC Deb 17 November 1927 vol 210 cc1141-2W
Captain FRASER

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if the Government can do anything to avoid dismissals of temporary ex-service civil servants; if they will find other appointments for those who received notice of dismissal from the Ministry of Labour Office at Kew early this month; and if he will assure the House that these men, and any women similarly affected, will be rein-stated before posts are offered to young men and women as a result of the Civil Service Commissioners' examinations shortly to be held?

Mr. SAMUEL

No efficient temporary ex-service clerk will be discharged in order to make room for a successful candidate from the examination referred to. The recent discharges of a number of ex-service clerks who have failed to qualify for established posts have been necessitated by reduction of work in the Departments concerned. Preference is given to men so situated in filling temporary vacancies elsewhere, but considerations of economy and efficiency do not allow of these temporary clerks, men and women, being appointed to vacancies in the established classes.
