HC Deb 10 November 1927 vol 210 c386W
Mr. SULLIVAN

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware of the withdrawal of the grant formerly allowed the Dalziel Parish Council by the Unemployed Grants Committee, in aid of the Relief Work Scheme No. V. 535, carried on by the Dalziel Parish Council wholly in the interests of unemployed workmen; and whether he will cause inquiry to be made with a view to the restoration of the grant and a continuance of this relief work in order to provide work for at least a few of the great number of unemployed workmen, including miners, in this large industrial area whose benefit at the Employment Exchange offices has become exhausted, and the men and their families compelled by destitution to seek Poor Law relief?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I understand the Unemployment Grants Committee declined to extend beyond the 30th April of this year the grant for the scheme to which the hon. Member refers on the ground that at that date unemployment in the Dalziel parish could no longer be regarded as exceptional. If the parish council desire a further grant, they should make application to the Committee, which will consider it in the light of present circumstances.
