HC Deb 09 May 1927 vol 206 cc44-5W
Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty, with reference to the six established men under notice of discharge from His Majesty's dockyard, Devonport, whether he can see his way to retain their services until the statements of their case, which they have been invited to submit, have been examined; and whether, if it is impossible to retain them as established men, they can be retained on a hired basis and employed for six months in order that they may at any rate by this means qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefit to which they are not entitled if discharged as established men?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The statements submitted on behalf of the men have been examined and the discharge of two of the men has been suspended; the answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty with reference to the six established men who are under notice of discharge from His Majesty's Dockyard, Devonport, whether he will state how long these men have served, whether they are married, and how many children they have, in each case?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The service of the men referred to, including apprenticeship time ranges from 19 years 8 months, to 36 years 9 months; there is no information at the Admiralty concerning their domestic circumstances.
