HC Deb 02 May 1927 vol 205 c1297W
Lieut.-Colonel HORLICK

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to proposals made by chambers of commerce for easing the present position with regard to French students and others coming to this country and British students going to France; and what are the existing arrangements in this matter between the French and British Governments?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. Every possible facility is and always has been granted to genuine French students to enter this country for the purpose of study. Apart from this, an agreement was made with the French Government at the end of 1923 whereby French: students up to a maximum of 500 per annum might come to this country and take up minor employment with a view to improving their knowledge of English business methods. There is no arrangement with the French Government in regard to British students going to France, but genuine British students going there have not, I understand, encountered any difficulties since the enforcement of the latest immigration regulations.
