§ Mr. MARDY JONESasked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been called to the fact that the Hereford Rural Council has no scheme for granting subsidy for the building of new houses; whether he is aware that they have refused a subsidy on a bungalow built in their area by Mr. F. B. Cooke on the ground that they have no scheme for subsidy; and whether, in such circumstances, he will grant a subsidy?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe answer to the first two parts of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the third part of the question, I am not satisfied that sufficient reason exists for certifying the local authority to be in default under Section 9 of the Housing (Financial Provisions) Act, 1924; and in these circumstances I am precluded from making a grant of subsidy to Mr. Cooke.
