HC Deb 14 December 1927 vol 211 cc2317-8W
Major COHEN

asked the Minister of Labour what is the total number of men sent by the Employment Exchanges in Liverpool to work on the new East Lancashire road and what percentage of that number are ex-service men?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The total number of men who have been sent from Employment Exchanges in Liverpool to work on the new East Lancashire road is 296. Of this number, 75.6 per cent, are ex-service men.

Sir H. FOSTER

asked the Minister of Labour if he will increase the maximum age for the admission of ex-service candidates to Brandon and Claydon from 29 to 32 to enable men who have completed their first period of engagement to benefit under the scheme; and if he will consider some scheme of training of married ex-service men and for payment of allowances for wives and children on the same scale as for those men ordinarily in receipt of benefit?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Single men up to the age of 35 may now be admitted to Brandon and Claydon provided that they are in other respects suitable. Openings on farms in Australia and Canada for married men other than experienced farm workers are so limited that it is not at present practicable to consider their inclusion in the scheme of training.
