§ Colonel ENGLANDasked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to the police court proceedings under the Adoption of Children Act, 1926, which indicate that in those cases in which an illegitimate child is adopted by a relative of the dead wife the father of the child is ipso facto relieved of any moral responsibility for the continuance of the payment of any affiliation order granted in connection therewith; and whether he will arrange to have this debatable point contested in the High Court?

JOYNSON-HICKSI am not aware of the particular proceedings to which the hon. and gallant Member refers, but I have seen the report of a recent case in which the stipendiary magistrate for Manchester held that a bastardy order was not dissolved by an adoption order. I have no power to bring the question before the High Court for decision.
