§ Sir H. CROFTasked the hon. Member for Monmouth, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, whether his attention has been called to the fact that the Forestry Commission is failing in the New Forest to cut back furze, etc., from the highways and to cleanse ancient watercourses which take the surface water from the channels at the side of the roads, as is the case with private owners when called upon to conform with the law; and what steps he is taking to see that the Forestry Commission fulfils this necessary duty?
§ Sir L. FORESTIER-WALKERIt is not the duty of the Forestry Commission to cut back furze, etc., from the highways through the unenclosed common lands of the New Forest, or to cleanse water courses which take the surface water from the channels at the side of the roads on to the unenclosed common lands of the New Forest, nor have the Crown or the Forestry Commission ever carried out such works. Where, however, the highways or roads adjoin any lands enclosed for the growth of timber or trees in pursuance of the New Forest Act, 1877, the Forestry Commission do carry out such works.
