HC Deb 06 December 1927 vol 211 cc1199-200W
Mr. SULLIVAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the cost of education per head of the population and per head of the scholars in the elementary and secondary schools in Scotland for the two years ending 31st March, 1914 and 1927, respectively?

Sir J. GILMOUR

On account of the intimate association existing in Scotland between primary and secondary education, it as not possible to give even approximate figures for each type separately. The cost per head of average attendance in all schools was £5 12s. 3d. for the year ended 15th May, 1914, and for the year 1925–26 (the latest period for which figures are available) £15. The corresponding figures per head of population were 18s. 1d. and £2 5s. respectively.
