Mr. WARD LAW-MILNEasked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the very large increase in the imports of carpets from abroad, now amounting to about £3,000,000 in value annually; and whether he can give details as to quantities imported from each country abroad, separately?
§ Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTERThe value of the carpets and rugs of wool imported into the United Kingdom during the first ten months of 1927 was £2,729,000, and that of such imported carpets and rugs re-exported during the same period was £1,337,000. These figures show increases, as compared with the first ten months of last year, of £657,000 and £438,000 respectively. Particulars of the countries from which these imported goods were consigned are not available, but such particulars for the complete year 1926 will be published within a few days in Volume II 1189W of the Annual Statement of the Trade of the United Kingdom for that year.
