HC Deb 04 April 1927 vol 204 cc1710-1W
Mr. DENNISON

asked the Minister of Labour the number of applicants for extended unemployment benefit in the Birmingham area whose applications were refused during the first three months of 1925, 1926 and 1927, respectively; and, of these, how many are ex-service men?

Mr. BETTERTON

The following table shows the results of applications for extended benefit considered by local committees in the Birmingham area during the periods mentioned:

employment in this country and those in training for employment overseas, the gross cost per head, the items making up such cost, the unemployment benefit to which the trainee is entitled, the payment required towards cost of board and lodging and the net cost?

Sir A. STEEL - MAITLAND

The following gives the information desired:

trainees, cost of hostel and canteen, power, light, heat and rates, and allowances for men in training for employment overseas.

Owing to the short period over which the figures have to be taken, comparisons between the figures in the table should be made with caution, as there are various factors which may temporarily increase or reduce the costs and particularly the net costs.

Men in training for employment in this country receive unemployment benefit of 18s. per week, and pay 13s. per week towards the cost of board and lodging. Those in training for employment overseas receive free board and lodging and a personal allowance of 5s. a week, but are not in receipt of unemployment benefit.
