asked the Minister of Health the total amount expended on poor relief in England and Wales in the six months ended 30th September, 1926; the amount expended in the corresponding period of 1925; and the amount contributed in each of the two periods to the total expenditure by local rates?

I regret that the information desired is not available and that even for the yearly periods for which this information is collected it cannot be available until some time after the close of the financial year. The amount distributed as out-relief for the six months ended 30th September, 1925, was £7,000,000 and for the six months ended 30th September, 1926, £13,000,000. The total amount expended on poor relief in the financial year 1924–25 was £36,840,000. Of this £31,200,000 was contributed by local rates. In the financial year 1925–26 a sum of £31,400,000 was contributed for poor relief from local rates.
