HC Deb 14 May 1926 vol 195 c1094W
Major HILLS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he will have inquiries made into the case of James Theoburn Graham, of Townend, Sowerby, Thirsk, who was born 14th February, 1855, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, whose claim to old age pension has been admitted, but who has only received such pension from 10th April last; and whether he will give directions that the back money may be paid.

Mr. RONALD McNEILL

I have made enquiries into this case. It appears that no evidence could be produced by the claimant or obtained from official records to show that James Thoburn Graham was born on 14th February, 1855. As, however, the local Old Age Pension Committee were satisfied that he had attained the statutory age of 70 in April, 1926, a pension was granted as from the 7th April last, the first payment being made on Friday, 9th April last. No appeal having been made against this decision, it has become under the law final and conclusive. No question of payment prior to the 9th April therefore arises.
