HC Deb 11 March 1926 vol 192 c2606W
Mr. GILLETT

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that £135,000 is to be spent in Kenya on the building of schools for white children; and whether, seeing that a considerable proportion of the taxation of the Colony falls upon the natives, it is intended to increase the amount of money spent on the education of native children to a corresponding extent?

Mr. AMERY

The figure mentioned is included in the proposals for capital expenditure now under my consideration. It represents an annual charge on Kenya funds of, say, £8,000 a year, against which must be set increased receipts from boardng and tuition fees. As the annual vote for native education has just been increased by £10,000 a year, there is no apparent grievance. Increased facilities for native education are continually being considered by the local Government, and the matter will also be dealt with shortly by my Advisory Committee here.
