HC Deb 09 March 1926 vol 192 c2135W
Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Minister of Labour how many men and women, approximately, were working on special work or schemes for the relief of unemployment financed partly or wholly by the Treasury on 31st January. 1923, 1924 and 1925, respectively?

Mr. BETTERTON

Returns of men engaged upon State-aided schemes of work are received monthly. The number of men employed on 25th January, 1924, was 89,047, and on 31st January, 1925, was 109,399. These figures take no account of the employment provided indirectly, e.g., in the preparation and transport of materials. I regret that no figures on a comparable basis are available for January, 1923. Separate statistics are not available in respect of women, but the number of women employed on relief schemes is believed to be negligible.
