CUNLIFFE-LISTERThe latest information available regarding unemployment among seamen is contained in the answer given to the hon. and gallant Member for Hull Central (Lieut.-Commander Kenworthy) on 1st April last. I am obtaining up-to-date statistics which I will let my hon. Friend have in the course of a few days. It is not possible, until long after the event, to obtain complete records of the number of alien seamen serving on British ships, but the following are figures showing the number of seamen engaged at Mercantile Marine offices in the United Kingdom during the three months ended the 31st March last, together with their nationalities:
British, other than Asiatics and Africans, 114,702 or 93.61 per cent.
Foreigners, other than Asiatics and Africans, 3,270 or 2.67 per cent.
Asiatics and Africans (British and Foreign), 4,561 or 3.2 per cent.
