HC Deb 25 February 1926 vol 192 cc749-50W
Mr. TINNE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, seeing that the leading members of the Turkish Government now reside at Angora and that the Soviet Government have for several years had an ambassador at Angora, he will say what number of days during the past two years the British ambassador has spent at Angora; what is the annual cost of maintaining British embassies at Pera in winter and on the Bosphorus in summer; and whether, in view of the effect on British commercial interests in Turkey arising from present diplomatic arrangements, he will take the matter into consideration?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

The answer to the first part of the question is 24 days, and in addition various visits were made by members of His Excellency's staff. The approximate annual cost of the maintenance of the Embassy house at Pera and Therapia is £2,200 and £675 respectively. As regard the third part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the replies returned to the hon. Member for Ilford (Sir F. Wise) and the hon. Member for Gainsborough (Captain Crookshank) on the 22nd of December and the 10th of February respectively.
