HC Deb 25 February 1926 vol 192 c757W
Colonel PERKINS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the nature of the new Regulations about to come into force in Turkey, prohibiting foreign steamship companies from carrying cargo or passengers from one Turkish port to another; and how many nations now adopt such a policy?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

Apart from concessions to certain allied shipping companies granted under the Peace Settlement of Lausanne, which come to an end on 1st July next, the coasting trade of Turkey has, since the war, been reserved' to Turkish vessels. It appears that the new Regulations to which my hon. Friend refers relate to the control of the coasting services provided by Turkish vessels. A considerable number of countries reserve their coasting trade to national vessels, including 11 of the 20 more important maritime countries of the world.
