HC Deb 25 February 1926 vol 192 c753W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many farm educational institutes have been built; how many are in process of erection; and what the expenditure on those institutions amounts to, as well as the cost of extending existing institutes; and whether any are being built or extended in Scotland?

Mr. GUINNESS

There are 14 farm institutes in England and Wales, including two which were not aided by the Ministry, and there are two farm institutes in process of erection. The estimated expenditure in connection with the two latter, including the cost of the farms, the erection of the institutes and cottages, and the improvement of the farm buildings, is roughly £60,000, towards which the Ministry will make a grant of about £42,000. During the last two years approval has been given to extensions and improvements at certain of the existing farm institutes at an estimated cost of £100,000. The Ministry's grant in these cases will be about £72,000. With reference to the last part of the question, I must refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
