HC Deb 19 February 1926 vol 191 cc2300-1W
Mr. HILTON YOUNG

asked the Postmaster-General whether it was proposed at the Berne Telegraph Convention last year to reduce the length of code words from 10 to five letters; and whether any action has been or is to be taken upon such proposal?

Viscount WOLMER

Suggestions for the reduction of the length of code words from 10 to five letters, accompanied by some modification in rates, were considered at the International Telegraph Conference in October last. The suggestions were not adopted; but the Conference appointed an International Committee, on which this country is represented, to consider the regulations governing the use of code, and to submit a report on the subject to the next International Conference. It is an instruction to the Committee that any scheme they propose should be so framed as not to impose additional financial burdens on the senders of international telegrams.
