HC Deb 17 February 1926 vol 191 c1957W
Mr. RENNIE SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the number of native police at present operating in the Saar Valley; and what is the number of French troops in the Saar now and one year ago?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

According to a statement of the Governing Commission the gendarmerie provided for by the Treaty of Versailles will number 1,005 men by the end of March next. I do not know the strength of the French troops now in the Saar, and have not had time to secure the information since I saw the hon. Member's question, but the number is less than it was a year ago.

Mr. RENNIE SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he proposes to recommend any changes in the course of this year in the administration of the Saar, and, in particular, with regard to the President of the Administration?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

I think it not unlikely that some change may be proposed which the British representative would be prepared to support.
