HC Deb 11 February 1926 vol 191 cc1269-70W
Colonel DAY

asked the Home Secretary the amount of fines inflicted for breaches of the Motor Car Acts at police courts in England and Wales during the last 12 months; and what method of auditing the accounts of such fines is in operation?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The net amount of fines transmitted (after certain deductions for costs, etc.), for payment into the Motor Tax Account in 1925 was £142,272. The accounts of clerks to justices, including accounts of such fines as these, are audited under arrangements made locally; in some counties there is also Government audit by agreement. The question of further arrangements for audit is raised in the Report of the Public Accounts Committee, and as soon as the evidence given before that Committee is available, the matter will be considered in consultation with other Departments concerned.
