HC Deb 11 February 1926 vol 191 c1283W
Mr. GROVES

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will investigate the circumstances attending the refusal of unemployment benefit to Mr. W. G. Savill, of 71, Station Street, Stratford, No. 58,927, who worked on the Great Eastern Railway for 37 years was compelled to retire at the 65-years age limit on the 8th January, signed the register at the Exchange on the following day, and was refused benefit as and from the 9th on the ground that he was not genuinely seeking employment; whether he is aware that the officer who disqualified him never saw or interviewed him; and on what grounds an officer of the Ministry determines that such a man, after 37 years' work, is not genuinely seeking employment?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am having inquiry made and will let the hon. Member know the result as soon as possible.
