HC Deb 10 February 1926 vol 191 cc1058-9W
Mr. GILLETT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the most recent figures showing the amount of taxation per head of population for Great Britain, France, and Italy?

Mr. RONALD McNEILL

The figures are as follow:

United Kingdom 1925–26 £15 4s. 0d.
Estimated.
France 1925 Francs 702.4
Actual.
Italy 1924–25 Lire 390.2
Actual.
I must, however, add that inferences must only be drawn from these figures with great caution. Apart from the differences of the total national incomes from which these taxes are paid there are many differences between the three countries, both in their economic circumstances and in their financial systems (including the relation between central and local expenditure).
