HC Deb 10 February 1926 vol 191 cc1069-70W
Mr. WELLS

asked the Secretary of State for Air (1) if the building of the airship R 101 has been commenced; and, if so, when the airship will be completed;

(2) if he proposes to carry out any further experimental work with airship R 33; and, if not, does he propose to retain the services of any members of the crew;

(3) when the airship R 36 will be ready to carry out the proposed experimental flights in Egypt?

Sir S. HOARE

shall be dealing in the immediate future with these matters either in the Memorandum accompanying the Air Estimates or in the statement which I shall make when introducing them, and I should be obliged if the hon. Member would kindly wait for a reply until then.

Mr. VIANT

asked the Secretary of State for Air (1) in view of the fact that the essential experiments for which R 33 was specifically reconditioned were ineffectual before the breakaway in April last, have the subsequent experiments, carried out under perfect weather conditions, provided all the data required by the scientific experts for the construction of airships for operation in all weathers; and will the R 33 be now definitely put out of commission;

(2) if he will state, in view of the fact that the trial flights to the East of the R36 were stated to be essential to ascertain the behaviour of the gas-bags under tropical conditions, how is it proposed to obtain this essential information before subjecting the new giant airships to this test?

Sir S. HOARE

I shall be dealing in the immediate future with these matters either in the Memorandum accompanying the Air Estimates or in the statement which I shall make when introducing them, and I should be obliged if the hon. Member would kindly wait for a reply until then.
