§ Mr. JENKINSasked the Secretary for Mines what number of collieries in the South Wales coalfield are closed down, and are in receipt of the subsidy; and will he give the names of the collieries, and the amounts they have received up to the latest available date?
§ Colonel LANE FOXIt would be very laborious to ascertain these particulars, and I do not think that the value of the information would justify the labour. As I informed the hon. Member for Spennymoor (Mr. Batey) on 18th November last, the amount thus paid must be a quite insignificant fraction of the total amount paid in subvention.
§ Mr. G. HALLasked the Secretary for Mines the amount of subsidy paid to colliery companies in South Wales during 876W last year, and will he give the amount paid to each company separately?
§ Colonel LANE FOXThe amount of subvention paid to colliery owners in South Wales and Monmouth during last year is £2,690,941. As regards the second part of the question, I regret that these particulars cannot be ascertained without an expenditure of time and labour out of all proportion to the result, and which, in view of the very heavy work now falling on my Department, I could not justify.
