HC Deb 09 February 1926 vol 191 cc881-2W
Mr. FORREST

asked the Postmaster-General whether it is in accordance with the regulations that on a packet of crochet work imported from Canada, and worth 4s. 2d., a charge of 6d. is imposed by the Post Office for opening the parcel for the Customs, who, in their turn, charge 1s.?

Viscount WOLMER

The charge to which the hon. Member refers is made in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 8 of the Foreign and Colonial Parcel Post Warrant, 1925 (Statutory Rules and Orders, 1925, No. 729). It is imposed in respect of the work performed by the Post Office on behalf of the addressee in clearing a parcel through the Customs; and there is no relation between the cost of that work and the amount of the duty raised on the parcel.
