HC Deb 09 December 1926 vol 200 c2311W
Mr. FORREST

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the need for additional houses and the amount of unemployment in the building trade, his Department will consider the desirability of securing the adoption of better means of transport for workers and the provision of purely temporary housing to enable all arrears to be caught up, particularly in view of the fact that the full subsidy will only be paid on sanctioned houses which are completed by 1st October, 1927?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I would point out to the hon. Member that housing is only one part of the building industry, and that the great. bulk of unemployed persons in the industry are not members of the skilled trades which are essential for house building, but consists largely of labourers and others. I am not aware that any serious difficulty arises in securing the transfer of skilled labour to areas where it may be required.
