HC Deb 02 August 1926 vol 198 cc2653-4W
Mr. DUCKWORTH

asked the Minister of Agriculture the rates of wages paid to workers engaged on beet-sugar cultivation in Great Britain and in the various sugar-producing countries in Europe?

Mr. GUINNESS

In England and Wales workers employed on the cultivation of sugar-beet are entitled to be paid at not less than the general minimum time rates applicable under the Agricultural Wages (Regulation) Act to all workers employed in agriculture, although it is understood that in actual practice employment on lifting and topping the beet is generally paid for at piece rates, which yield to an efficient worker wages above the minimum time rates. I have no precise information as to the rates paid on the Continent.
