Mr. D. GRENFELL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is yet in a position to state the result of the inquiries addressed to the Government of India in regard to the Madras Planters' Labour Act?

Earl WINTERTON

No, Sir. An inquiry has been addressed to the Govern-merit of India by mail, but there has not been time for an answer to be received.

Mr. G. HALL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he will inform the House as to the number of criminal proceedings taken against plantation coolies and maistries for breach of contract under the Madras Planters' Labour Act during the last year in the Wynad Taluk and the Nilgiris; and what proportion of these proceedings in the Wynad Taluk were taken by European planters?

Earl WINTERTON

I have not the information asked for, but inquiry will be made should the hon. Member so desire.
