HC Deb 14 April 1926 vol 194 c205W
Colonel DAY

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that drivers of commercial vehicles and chars-a-bane are compelled to take excessively long journeys, which have been the cause of accidents happening as a result of the drivers being exhausted and thus becoming a menace to other road users; and will he take the necessary steps to make effective Regulations to control this traffic or introduce legislation having as its object this control?

Colonel ASHLEY:

I am not aware that the conditions under which the drivers of commercial motor vehicles have been working have been proved to be the cause of accidents. If the hon. and gallant Member can furnish me with any specific instances I should be obliged. I am not yet able to say when it will be possible to introduce the proposed legislation with regard to motor vehicles, but I do not anticipate that I shall be able to include in the Bill provisions relating to conditions of service.
