§ Sir A. SINCLAIRasked the Minister of Transport how much was paid in grants to county councils in Scotland for the upkeep and improvement of their Class I and Class II roads; and how much in addition was allocated for the improvement of unclassified roads in the rural areas of Scotland?
§ Colonel ASHLEYI assume that the question relates to the financial year now ending. During this period grants have been made from the Road Fund to county councils in Scotland, for the upkeep and improvement of roads and bridges, approximately to the following amounts:
£ Roads and Bridges in Classes I and II 1,123,000 Roads and Bridges Unclassified 97,000 In addition, a sum of over £500,000 has been set aside for the reconstruction of the Blair Athol-Inverness section of the Great North Road, work on which has recently been commenced. The hon. and gallant Member will appreciate that the amounts mentioned do not include the moneys set aside in previous years for works of road improvement which are still in course of execution.
