HC Deb 23 March 1925 vol 182 cc68-9W
Major GLYN

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the total number of blast furnaces in England; Scotland and Wales; how many of the furnaces have been blown out; and how many are now in blast in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively?

Mr. SAMUEL

The following particulars have been supplied to me by the National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers:

Situation. Total Number of Blast Furnaces. Of which there were at the end of February, 1925
In blast. Blown out.
In England, except Monmouth. 347 135 212
In Scotland 102 21 81
In South Wales and Monmouth. 33 8 25
Total 482 164 318

Owing to the need from time to time of repairs to furnaces and blowing plant, and for other reasons, it is not possible to have the whole number of furnaces in blast at the same time, The maximum number in blast during 1913 was 338. The maximum number in blast at any one time since the War was 303 in September, 1920.
