§ Colonel DAYasked the Home Secretary whether his attention had been drawn to the increase in the number of persons sentenced to imprisonment for periods of two weeks or less; and, in view of the apparent uselessness of such sentences, both to the State and the prisoners, together with the resulting expenditure thrown upon prison and police funds, will he consider introducing legislation or take such action that will result in fewer persons being dealt with in such a manner?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSThe subject is one of great importance, but I am not in a position to make any legislative proposals in regard to it at the present time.
